Y: Oh, let's keep it simple and use "from."
K: OK.
Y: A woman from Kansai.
◆ ……を教わります
K: 受け身でis ... あるいは be taught というのはどうでしょう？
J: Um... well, "to be taught" sounds a little bit formal or maybe even patronizing outside of a classroom situation.
あの... " to be taught"というのはちょっと堅苦しいというか、教室の外では恩着せがましく聞こえるかもしれない。
(patronizing = 見下すような、上から目線の、威張った、偉そうな、横柄な)
J: It concerned like that. So, we're going to use the word "learns." So, "learns 何々" or you can add a short "that," "learns that 何々."
◆ 「食べる（ということ）」の主語は？
Y: So, the subject would be "you" or "people" in general.
K: "You" is kind of casual and friendly?
Y: Right.

J: I'm sure they did.
K: Oh, yeah.
Y: Uh-huh. Positive.
K: All right.
J: Wonderful!

K: My question this time is... Have you tried "ehomaki" yet?
J: You know, I have seen homemade or I guess store-made ehomaki in the store... in the... and I've seen it ... but it's one of the few traditions that I have not tried yet.
K: Okay.
Y: Neither have I.
K: Oh!
J: No, so, neither one of us. Maybe we should try it this year.
K: Are you... like interested in it?
J: It is interesting.
K: How about you, Julia?
Y: I am interested in having the ehomaki, but not eating it all in one go. That sounds pretty um... tough to do.
K: Since you are ... you know, being a vegetarian, would you have anything you can't eat in it?
Y: That's true. That's another concern that I can't find any ehomaki in stores. I will have to make it myself, so... I'm a vegetarian, but I do eat eggs.
K: OK.
Y: So, I guess my ehomaki can have eggs and what... kampyo, uh... cucumbers uh... what else?
K: Well, that sounds really delicious to be.
Y: I bet. Some sesame seeds in them, toasty...
(toasty = warm and comfortable 暖かくて心地よい、トーストのようにほっこりした)
K: Oh, my.
Y: Oh, nice.
J: Just make sure you make it really big.
Y: That's the point. Yap.
K: Or long, huh.
Y: Well, how about you, Ken?
K: Well, I haven't tried ehomaki either.
J: Really!?
Y: Not yet.
K: No.
J: Wow!
K: Well, ehomaki came into Kanto much, much later...
Y: That's true.
K: ... than the Kansai, right? Maybe it's started in Kansai.
Y: Uh-huh.
K: And I was just talking to this lady from Kansai, she lives there now on the phone about ehomaki because I wanted to know what it was like.
J: Right.
K: And she told me a lot of things and most of the things she told me are in the dialogs, first one and the second.
J: Oh, for we talked about. Okay.
K: Yes. It was very educational.
J: Yeah.
K: And entertaining too. So, yeah, this time, I would love to try one.
Y: All three of us.
J: Yeah.
K: Well, thanks to her.
