K: ある女性というのは、a woman でいいですか? a certain woman?
C: Well, I think it would be the easiest and sounds better to my ears just to say "a woman" here.

多肉植物に害虫がいます
K: There are bugs on a woman's succulent. でどうでしょう?
C: Well, it's fine grammatically. Sounds good to me, but it also sounds though a little too dramatic, too suspenseful. And I don't really think that's necessary in this situation. So, I'd recommend starting the sentence with "a woman." So, it'll be "A woman has bugs on her succulent."

J: Sounds like the beginning of a scary movie.
C: Yeah, like I expect something really bad to happen.
J: There are bugs.

★ 彼女の兄
J: Well, yes, in Japanese, you have words for older and younger brother. But in English, you don't have to specify whether they are older or younger unless it has a specific purpose to the story. So, we're just going to use the simple "her brother."

★ 彼女に言います
K: Say to her でどうでしょう?
C: Well, again sounds good to me. But I think it sounds a little bit more conversational, just to say "tells her 何々."

★ すぐに
K: Now でどうでしょう?
J: Well, in the dialog she says, "I'll do that now." But in "Write It!" we're using it as a summary or reporting. If we use the word "now," it sounds like she's right there doing it right now.
K: Yeah.
J: So, we're going to use "right away."

K: 「教えます」は teach でしょうか?
C: Well, even though it sounds like it should be "teach." And he is technically teaching her something like sharing his knowledge, doesn't really sound to my ears very natural to use "teach" here though. I think using the verb "give" is a bit more natural. So, I would write "gives her a game plan."

★ そのあと
J: Well, the direct translation would be "after that." But I think in this case, we are going to use "then." Then...

★ ……に電話を代わります
C: Well, we're describing her action. We're describing what she is doing. And what she is doing is physically giving the phone to Bill.
K: なるほど
C: So, all we have to write is "gives the phone to 誰々 or Bill," in this case.

★ 夫のビル
J: So, there's a couple of ways we can do this. We can either do it the same order as the Japanese, which would be "her husband Bill." Or we can turn it completely around, just the opposite and say, "Bill, (comma) her husband."

K: 「問題」は problem でよろしいですか?
C: Yeah, I think so, Ken. In this situation, we're only dealing with one problem here, so, singular is fine.
K: 「職場での」は?
C: Well, for this, the preposition I would recommend using is "at." So, it would be "at work." So, the whole phrase together is "her problem at work."

★ XをYに相談します
J: Well, there are probably a couple of expressions that we could use, but the best one, the simplest one, most conversational one would be to use "talks to." So, the whole thing would be something like, "Kazuko talks to her father." Or this time "talks to him about her problem at work."

★ 早まることはないと言います
C: Well, a handy verb to use when we're giving advice is the verb "tell."
K: OK.
C: Um... because this is something her father is telling her, recommend that she do. So, the first part is going to be "her father tells her."

(she do 先週説明があったように recommend の後ろの that 節の中は原型に戻る)

K: OK.
C: And then the latter part we heard in the dialog, right?
K: Yeah.
C: So, the whole thing together is going to be "her father tells her not to jump the gun."

C: Yeah, basically, we can use the verb "tell" here.

C: Right. The "her" is "Kazuko."

C: "To" and we are going to use the verb "tell" here again.

J: Um... Actually, you can use both. They are interchangeable. But you have to be careful with "kids," because, that's a word that's a little more casual and can be rude depending on who you are talking to. So, it might be better to try and learn using "kids" and "children." We are going to use "children" here just be safe.

★ ……に順応している
C: Well, and here the verb we are going to use is "adjust."
K: OK, good.
C: And I would recommend writing "adjusting," the form we want to use. And because the children are adjusting to something. We want to use "to" here. So, "adjusting to 何々."

★ 新しい学校
K: the new school でしょうか?
J: Well, we want to know whose school. So, whose school is it?
K: Oh, "their" school.
J: Right, "their" school. So, we are going to use "their new school." It's a little more precise, easier to understand.

(precise = 的確、詳しい exact, detailed, specific)

C: The first way is really similar to the Japanese. It's the same order. So, we start with his profession, and we'll just write the name of his profession. We don't need to use the word "the" here. So, it's going to be, " TV meteorologist Peter Misora."
K: a とか the は最初に要らないのですね。
C: And the second way we can write this is we can start with his name, and then put his profession afterwards. So, it'll be " Peter Misora, TV meteorologist."
K: Great.

★ AだがBだと言います
J: The pattern is just the opposite of the Japanese. It's flipped. So, "誰々 says that A but that B."
K: 最初のthat はあってもなくても良いわけですよね?
J: Right.
K: but の後ろのthat はどうでしょう?
J: So, when you use the word "but," it's more conversational if you don't use "that." You could, but it sounds a little strange.

K: 言っていますは is saying でよろしいでしょうか?
C: Well, I think it's more common in the Japanese to use the present progressive, isn't it? ... in these situations?
K: Yeah, it is.
C: But in English, I think it's more common to use the present tense.
K: OK.
C: So, I would recommend using "say," and it would be, "The TV meteorologist says 何々."
K: OK.

★ 十二分に警戒すべきです
K: take precautions では足りませんか?
J: Well, that's fine. But like in the dialog, we want them to be even more careful. So, we add the word "extra," "take extra precautions."
J: And in Japanese, there is no subject, but in English, you need one. So, the subject will be "people." So, "People should still take extra precautions."
