解説:
ジェフさんの Oh, thank you very much. という声がおかしかったので、「あれ、スピーカーか何かに繋いじゃったのかね?」と顕先生が反応している。

K: ダイアログではkidsと言っていますが、Childrenでもよろしいですか?
J: Um... Actually, you can use both. They are interchangeable. But you have to be careful with "kids," because, that's a word that's a little more casual and can be rude depending on who you are talking to. So, it might be better to try and learn using "kids" and "children." We are going to use "children" here just be safe.

★ ……に順応している
C: Well, and here the verb we are going to use is "adjust."
K: OK, good.
C: And I would recommend writing "adjusting," the form we want to use. And because the children are adjusting to something. We want to use "to" here. So, "adjusting to 何々."

★ 新しい学校
K: the new school でしょうか?
J: Well, we want to know whose school. So, whose school is it?
K: Oh, "their" school.
J: Right, "their" school. So, we are going to use "their new school." It's a little more precise, easier to understand.

(precise = 的確、詳しい exact, detailed, specific)

J: Fine. School is in full swing now and they're both adjusting very well, considering.
J: They must ... their ...
J: Jack? You're breaking up.
J: What?
J: Breaking ... that ... said?
J: Hang on. I'm moving closer to the window.
J: I'm breaking up with you?
J: What? No! I said you're breaking up, your voice.
J: Oh.
J: Are you?
J: No.

C: Whew! That's a relief.
K: Not yet.

このストーリーのおち:

「You're breaking up. (声が途切れているわよ)」と言った女性の言葉を男性は誤解して「何だって? breaking up (僕と別れる)だって?」と反応する。その後、「違うわよ。声が途切れていると言ったのよ」と女性は言うものの、つい、不安になった女性が「Are you?(あなた、私と別れるつもりなの?」 男性「No. まさか!そんなことはしないよ」と切り返した。

そこでキャロリンさんは笑いながら、「あー、良かった。この物語の2人が別れなくて」 と言うと。顕先生は、「Not yet. (まだ、どうなるかわからによ)」と言っている。遠山顕先生がスキットをお書きになっているのでしょうから、この2人の将来は、顕先生の手の中にあるのでしょう。


生徒さんからの質問より:

今回のダイアログでは、電話で会話をしていて、「声が途切れている」「スピーカーに切り替える」というセンテンスが出てきていました。「声が途切れて聞こえるときに、スピーカーに切り替えると、よく聞こえるようになるのでしょうか?」という質問がありました。

私が思うに、この場面では、声が途切れているので、さらに音声をよくするためにスピーカーに切り替えたのではなく、単純に、何か仕事をしていて、手をあけたかったのかなと思います。

You’re breaking up. (声が途切れている)
I’m going to put you on speaker. (スピーカーに切り替える)

これらのセンテンス、使えるので覚えておきましょう。私もアメリカから電話がかかってきたとき良く使っています。電波の調子が悪い時があるのですよねえ。本当に声が途切れ途切れになります。そして、手がふさがっているとき、PCを打ちながら会話したいときは、スピーカーに切り替えることがあります。

J: Right. Well, there’s actually two ways of doing this.
K: OK.
J: And the first pattern is the same order as the Japanese, "Kazuko's daughter, Sachi," or "Her son, Jorge."
K: OK.
J: Now, the other way is to put the names of the persons at the beginning of the sentence. So, "Shachi, (comma) Kazuko's daughter," or "Jorge, (comma) her son." Either way is fine.
K: Got it.

K: high nose, tall nose … まさかねえ~
C: Well, it's a really kind of colorful way to describe the idea. In English, we'd use the word "proud."
K: OK.
C: So, I think it would be "that makes 誰々 proud."
K: Got it.

★ おじいちゃん
K: grandfather かなあ~
J: Well, if it was おじいさん, it would be grandfather. But that might be a little bit too formal, might sound a little formal for this particular case.
K: OK.
J: So, we're going to use "grandpa," which is cute and familiar and very endearing.

(endearing = 親しみやすい、いとしさを感じさせる making someone like you, easily able to make people like you)

J: Kazuko's daughter Sachi is the front-runner for the lead in a school musical and her son George made the wrestling team. That makes their grandpa proud of them.

C: Sachi, Kazuko's daughter is the front-runner for the lead in a school musical. And George, her son made the wrestling team. That makes their grandpa proud of them.

J: Oh, yeah.
C: Woohoo!
J: Well done.
