C: Well, here are two ways we can write this.
K: OK.
C: For the first way, we can write "is taking the first lesson." ... which is similar to the Japanese.
C: And for the second way, we can write "is at the first lesson."
K: How about "in the first lesson"?
C: I think "at" is what we want to use here.

J: Yes, "a."
J: Right. So, in English, first of all, you want to know what kind of course it is.
K: Uh-huh.
J: And in this case, it's a pottery course.
J: And then in the second thing you want to know is "who it is for."
K: Uh-huh.
J: Who was the course for? And it's for beginners. So, in English, put together, it would be "a pottery course for beginners."

C: Well, this wasn't in the dialog.
K: No.
C: So, I would recommend starting with the verb "helps" here.
K: Okay.
C: And the teacher is actually doing something from Mark.

C: So, what the teachers helping him out with is the clay.
K: Ah, okay.
C: So, it'll be "helps him out with the clay."

C: Well, earthenware is actually the only one that I'm the most familiar with because I used to work with pottery, but yeah, earthenware is made of clay and it's fired at a relatively low temperature.
C: And one of its unique features is that it gets brittle and it has small holes in it.
(brittle もろい、弱々しい)
C: So, because of that, liquid or air can go through it. So, a glaze is used to cover the object.
(glaze うわぐすり)
C: Yeah, so the glaze is used to cover the object before it's fired in the kiln for a second time.
(kiln キルン、窯[かま])
J: It's not actually made of stone.
K: Okay. Do you know?
J: It's made from a particular kind of clay which is fired at higher temperatures, and it becomes more durable become stronger with a stone like quality. So, that's why they call it stoneware.
J: Right, because it's stronger, more durable, it's waterproof so it doesn't need the glaze.
C: How can I follow that joke?
K: No, you shouldn't. It's so stupid.
C: No, it's not. Well, porcelain is a refined clay and it's fired at a very high temperature.

C: And most people are familiar with porcelain. It's extremely hard and shiny.
C: And it originated in China and it came to be popularly called Fine China.
C: And it's also known as Bone China when ground animal bone is added to clay.
K: Well, you learn something new every day.
J: So, which do you prefer, Ken?
K: Oh, I love stoneware.
J: Stoneware.
C: OK.
K: It's so solid and seems like it's gonna stay forever. What do you think, Jeff? What do you like?
J: Um... Depending on porcelain, what they use it for, sometimes it's too delicate and I'm afraid to pick it up because I'm gonna break it or something. So I'm..., I'm with you. I like stoneware.
