K: Luke-san comes up with some nice advice.
J: Uh-huh.
C: Yeah.
K: He's good.

U R the ★

KCJ: That was great.

J: All right, Carolyn...
C: Uh-huh.
J: You are the star.
C: Sounds good.

J: What did the boss say?
C: He said we did a good job.
J: Great!
C: We're getting a bonus!
J: Even better.

==========
Say It!
==========
K: Jeff, are you ready five times?
J: I blew it... blew it, blow it.
K: ... in one breath.
J: I’ll try not to blow it.
C: Oh, yeah. Don't blow it.
K: Sorry, you'll have to "blow it" for five times.
J: OK.

(悪いね。これから5回「失敗」してもらわないといけないね。
[I blew it を5回言ってもらうので……])

J: I blew it! ×5
K: You did it. Wow!

C: Yay!
J: All right.
KCJ: Perfect! You didn't blow it.

==========
Write It!

★ 残念なことに
K: "I am sorry to say that 何々." これはいかがでしょうか?
C: Well, I think it's okay to use that phrase in some situations.
K: Uh-huh.
C: But here, I'd recommend keeping it simple, and just use the word "unfortunately."
K: Fortunately, I know that word.
C: It sounds a bit more natural to me in this situation.
K: Okay.
―――――

Maddie waits on Mayor Morris. Unfortunately, he says she didn't listen well. Luke tells her to just keep on smiling.

J: I bet they did.
C: Of course. Great job! I'm sure.

===================
In Another Situation!
===================
K: So Carolyn, what's another situation gonna (going to) be like?
C: Ah! It's a success this time.
―――――

M: That's Justin Swift at my table, right?

(Justin Swift = Justin Bieber [ジャスティン・ビーバー] と Taylor Swift [テイラー・スウィフト] の合体)

L: Oh, yeah!
M: I went ahead and took his order.
L: Good. How did it go?
M: An epic success.

(epic success = 大成功、 awesome, brilliant)

L: Oh. How did that happen?
M: He said I listened well and that his eggs were just perfect. And he tipped me generously.
L: Such a great start. Keep up the good work.
M: I will.

K: So, you got tipped generously.
C: Yes.
J: All right.
C: He's very happy with the service.
K: Nice start in this situation.
J: Yeah.
C: Yeah, I certainly didn't blow it.
J: I'm sure it has something to do with your smile.

(have something to do with ~と関係がある)

K: Right. You know, they said we did a good job last time.
JC: Oh. Well, I hope they say the same thing today.
K: Yeah.

J: That would be the difficult part of the job, cleaning up.
K: Oh, yes.

J: All right, Carolyn. You are the star.
C: Super.

J: What's the new French teacher like?
C: He's very friendly.
J: Nice.
C: He said he loves collecting kokeshi dolls.
J: Wow! We have something in common.

(have something in common = 通ずるものがある...、少し似た所がある)

C: Oh.

==========
Say It!
==========
K: Carolyn, are you ready five times in one breath?
J: Have fun.
C: Oh, that's right. Now, it's my turn to have fun.
K: Let's hear it.

C: Let the baby have fun! ×5

J: Yeah.
C: Great.
KCJ: Well done. That was fun.

==========
Write It!

★ 次の日の朝
J: Well, direct translation would be something like, "the next day in the morning."
J: Or you could kind of reverse it, you could say "in the morning the next day."
J: Or actually, there's more simple way of saying it, you could say "the next morning."
K: I like that too.

★ マディが担当する席で
K: 席は chair でよろしいですか?
C: In English, when we talk about the area that a server is in charge of, we usually call it "a table." So, in this case, would be "Maddie's table."
C: And then we can add the preposition "at" to the beginning. So the whole phrase would be "at Maddie's table."

★ ……するようにと彼女に言います
J: Well, once again, we are going to use the word "tell." And we need to know who someone is telling something to. So, it's "tell her to 何々."
K: I see.
―――――

J: The next day in the morning, at Maddie's table, a baby is throwing food on the floor. Luke tells her to let the baby have fun and clean it up later.

C: The next morning, at Maddie's table, a baby is throwing food on the floor. Luke tells her to let the baby have fun and clean it up later.

C: Oh, yeah.
J: I know they did.
K: All right.
C: (They) Did a great job.
J: Good job.

===================
In Another Situation!
===================
K: So, Jeff...
J: Uh-huh.
K: What's another situation gonna (going to) be like this time?
J: Well, this time, Luke has two professional wrestlers at his table.
―――――

L: You came back!
M: What?
L: Low pay, no tips, high turnover.... Just kidding.
M: I'm not against it.
L: I seated professional wrestlers. They ordered a lot of items. Can you help me?
M: Sure. Oh, look! They're arm-wrestling on the table.
L: They always do that. Let them have fun.
M: Oh, no. They just cracked the table.
K: Uh, no problem. They'll pay for the damage.
M: Wow! They ARE pros.
W: Again.

K: Oh, yeah. That was fun.
J: Yeah, we should do a whole show of professional wrestlers.
K: Carolyn, you once said you like to collect CDs and things.
C: Oh, yeah, I love collecting CDs.
J: Are they Canadian singers and performers?
C: A big part of my collection and there’s lots of Canadian singers.
J: Are there that many?
C: Oh, yeah, of course. I mean, there’s Rush, there’s Alanis Morissette, Neil Young, uh… PTO… Who else there? Guess Who…

Rush = ラッシュは、カナダ出身のスリーピース・ロックバンド。
Alanis Morissette = アラニス・モリセットは、カナダの女性シンガーソングライター、女優。
Neil Young = カナダ・トロント出身のシンガーソングライター、ミュージシャン、ギタリスト。
PTO =
The Guess Who = ゲス・フーは、カナダで結成されたロックバンド。代表曲は1970年5月に3週連続全米1位を記録した『アメリカン・ウーマン』

K: Well, unfortunately, we're running out of time here.
C: But you said you wanted to hear about my collection, you know.
K: Oh, yeah, yeah, sure. How about after the program? I'll buy you a cup of coffee.
C: Okay.

K: So until next time
J: Keep listening.
C: Keep practicing.
K: And keep on smiling and fighting, no, not fighting.
KCJ: Bye!

★ Question 1
What is this commercial about?

K: Back to the question?
J: Uh-huh. As always, what is this commercial about?
K: Carolyn, what's it about?
C: Trail-running shoes from Joe's Outdoor Shoes & Boots.

J: That's a mouthful.

K: So that's the name of the store and that's the kind of shoes they're advertising here.
J: Right. The name of the store is Joe's Outdoor Shoes & Boots and the kind of shoes that they're advertising are ...
C: Trail-running shoes. Because there sounds like they are on a fairly rough trail, right?
K: Uh-huh.
C: Lots of rocks, there's water.
J: Yeah, they have to be careful.

K: You can walk and you can run.
C: Yes.
K: ... in these shoes.
J: Uh-huh. I think the woman wanted to know if they had women sizes. I'm sure they do.
K: Uh-huh.
J: And they're really good at traction.

C: ... which is good for slippery trails.
J: Yap. I wanna (want to) get me some of those.

★ Question 2
Why are the shoes so comfy?

K: OK. Back to question 2.
C: Alrighty. Why are the shoes so comfy?

K: Why, Jeff?
J: Well, according to the commercial. They have comfortable cushioned insoles.

K: So, that's insoles.
C: Yes.
J: Right, insoles. I'm sure the outsides are comfortable too, but the insoles are most important, I think.
K: Uh-huh. So, the insoles are cushioned and they are comfortable.
J: Uh-huh.
C: Yes.
K: That's what they're saying.
C: Yes. And his feet never hurt because he has these insoles.
J: If you're running on rocks, you're still comfortable.
K: I see.

C: Now, I guess we just have to wonder how much they cost.
J: That leads us to ...
K: Question...
J: No. 3: How much did the man pay for his trail-running shoes?

★ Question 3
How much did the man pay for his trail-running shoes?

K: OK, back to question 3.
J: Right. How much did the man pay for his trail-running shoes?

K: Carolyn, did you catch the right answer?
C: I hope so. Forty-nine ninety or forty-nine dollars and ninety cents.
J: That's a good deal.
K: Yeah.
J: That's not bad.
K: Considering the quality ...
J: Yeah.
K: ... of the shoes.
J: And comfort.
K: Yeah.
C: And that's the sale price.
K: Ah, okay.
J: So, I wonder what they are when they are not on sale.
C: Oh, good question.
J: But that's a good price.
K: Yeah, this is a great price for this kind of shoes.
C: Yeah.
J: I would probably take two-pair for that.
K: All right. Well, we have one question left here.

★ Question 4
What colors do the trail-running shoes come in?

K: OK. Back to the last question.
J: Hmm.
C: Okay! What colors do the trail-running shoes come in?

K: Jeff, what's the answer?
J: Red and black.

J: Black would probably look better, but I think I would probably go with red.
C: Oh. Because ....
K: Oh, you already thinking of buying them.
J: Maybe one pair of each.
C: Why would you go for red? Because, it’s easy to see?
J: Umm... because if you got lost you could wave them in the air. They would be ...
C: Take of your shoes and hold them up.
J: Yes. They would be fairly noticeable, I would think.
K: Yeah.
C: That's funny.
K: That's the color to denote danger too.

(denote = ~を意味する、~を示す、~の印である)

J: Yeah, well, that's true.
C: Well, you have to take care because the sale ends tonight.
J: Oh! I guess I better hurry then.
K: Okay. This commercial is really working for Jeff and for me too, maybe.
J: Yeah. Shoes sound great.
C: You can buy me a pair if you like.

CJ: Listen for it for the last time.
