ラジオ英会話 Monday, July 3

So, Katie, what's another situation going to be like?
Ken, they are on a boat.

                            • -

Here's a chart. You're the navigator.

(chart = a map, especially one used for planning what direction a ship or aircraft will travel in)
The boat rental agent said to just follow this line to the Heavenly Islands.
Right. It should be relatively easy to find the paradise atoll.

(atoll = 環状サンゴ島 a ring-shaped coral reef or a string of closely spaced small coral islands)

It's situated north of the Buddha Rock.

(be situated = 位置する be located)
(Buddha Rock = 仏岩)

Good to know.
It's starting to get light. The sun is coming up soon.
Now let's relax. Turn on the radio and listen to Rajiei.
Wow! We really ARE in paradise.

Oh, that's one way to look at it. Positive.
Wonderful statement from Shirley.
Wonderful phrase.

                    • -

So, Jeff ....
Uh-huh.
What's another situation going to be like?
Well, this time, they are not in the convertible. They're in a spaceship.

(convertible = コンバーチブル、オープンカー a car with a roof that can be folded back or removed completely)
They are everywhere. They’re riding everything.

                        • -

Meteor shower's pouring down now! Put up the shield!

(meteor shower = 流星雨 a large number of meteors seen in a short time)
(meteor = a piece of rock or other matter from space that produces a bright light as it travels)

I don't know how. I've tried every button on the control panel.
There's planet Rajiei.
Good! Ahhhh!!!! Look at that huge asteroid coming this way!

(asteroid = 小惑星 Asteroids are minor planets, especially those of the inner Solar System. The larger ones have also been called planetoids.)
Oh! I see it coming. Go left! Go left!
Shirley! I almost ran into it!

(run into = 〜と衝突する crash or collide)
Sorry. Steer clear of that asteroid too!

(steer clear of = 〜を避ける to avoid someone or something that seems unpleasant, dangerous)

Listen to the radio. We hear their voices.
Oh, I feel empowered.

(feel empowered = パワーを得たように感じる) (empowered = to give power)

A meteor shower brings the Rajiei power.
Everything will be all right!

                      • -

Wow!
Wow!
You know, I see our future.
Oh, yes?
Yes?
Yeah. It's so bright.
We've got to wear sunglasses.

Shaka.
Hmm...
Yes.
Um… misunderstanding.

                  • -

So Katie, what's another situation going to be like?
It's a dark night in a resort.

                      • -

That man is making a strange hand signal at us.
It looks like the sign of the devil. Should we go faster?

(devil = an evil being)

Yes. Go! Go!
He turned, too. He's following us!
Let's run, Harvey.
Okay, Shirley.
There's a cabin.
Let me find the key.
Open the door, quick!

Excuse me.
Ahhhh!!!
This is my cabin.
I beg your pardon?

(I beg your pardon?
Synonyms: I’m sorry? Pardon me? Excuse me? Come again? What? Could you say that again? )

This is my cabin. I think yours is next door. There.
Oh, we're sorry. What does that hand signal you're making mean?
I just learned today. It's called "shaka." It means hang loose!
Oh!
You know, relax.
I see.
No stress. You know what I mean?
Yes.
Yeah.
All right.
Okay.
Friends?
Yeah, friends.
Yes.

                    • -

Ken.
Yes?
What does that hand sign mean that you're doing?
Kind of interesting.
Yeah. It's called a Rajiei sign. It means keep on smiling.
I love that.
Yeah, it's hard to explain, but it is.

Oh!
Harvey is going surfing?
Is he serious?
He is starting a new life here.

                      • -

So, Jeff ....
Uh-huh.
What's another situation going to be like this time?
Well, this time, Harvey is interested in bird watching.

                          • -

Hi, I'd like to take a drive around the island. I was wondering if you could give me some tips on where to go.
Certainly. Do you have anywhere in particular in mind?
I was thinking about Hakalau, the bird watchers’ paradise.
Oh, that's about an hour's drive, depending on traffic.
Thanks. Could you tell me where I can get Hawaiian language lessons?
I can help you with that. Would you like to start today?
Perfect.
Turn on the radio and you'll get...
Aloha! Welcome to Rajio Hawaiian Kaiwa.

              • -

So how far could that place be?
About an hour's drive?
From Honolulu?
