ラジオ英会話 Monday, October 6

Katie, what's the new situation going to be like?
Oh, they hate flies.

                                          • -

Shoo! Shoo! Close the door, Haley. You're letting flies in!
Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry. Here's a fly swatter for you. (fly swatter = ハエたたき)
Thanks. Did you know that maggots are fly larvae ―
Eww!
― and that maggots thrive on rotting garbage?
That's just gross!
Flies can carry disease-causing bacteria to food.
Okay, I've heard enough!
One just landed on your hot dog.
No!
I was just kidding.

No! I spoiled my hotdog. (spoiled = 台無しにした)
Not to worry. I'll take care of it.
Hu!? Run!

So that was a fly.
A talking fly.
Oh my goodness.
That's even scarier.
Wow.

So Jeff.
Uh-huh?
What's the new situation going to be like this time?
Well, they are in a very bad mood.
They are.

                                          • -

A butterfly landed on you, Mary.
I hate butterflies! They leave their yucky scales on you. (scale =〔チョウ・ガの〕鱗粉「りんぷん」)
Oh, it's actually a moth.
Ugh! It's gigantic! Get it off me, David!
There. It's gone. Moths and butterflies are close relatives.
That's not hard to believe.
Moths are great pollinators, too, you know.
To me, moths are annoying insects that flutter around light bulbs, and butterflies are annoying insects that flutter around people.
Oh, yuck!

Ohhh… They are in a bad mood.
So they have this moth phobia and butterfly phobia.
Evidently.
Yes.
Oh my goodness.
I think they have a happy phobia too.
What is that?
They don't like to be happy. They’re afraid of happiness.
Oh. But I know Katie
Yes?
You and happiness are close relatives.

ラジオ英会話 Wednesday, October 8

So what's the new situation going to be like, Katie?
They are 150 years old.
That young.
Yes.

                                                        • -

I caught a firefly.
Is it a mechanical bug or a real one?
No idea. Last time I caught one was 50 years ago or there about. That one was real.
Let's ask the Ultra Rajiei Book.
Okay.
Hmm… It says fireflies are also called lightning bugs.
Will it bite me?
No, no, no, it's harmless.
Good. Why does it have a blinking light?
It emits a flashing light pattern to attract mates.
Then what happens?
You know the story about the birds and the bees.
No… what story?
Listen to Rajio Eikaiwa.
What? Is it still on?
Oh, yes. Those guys must be 200 something and still they are going strong.
Oh!

ラジオ英会話 Thursday, October

So, what's the new situation going to be like, Jeff?
They are cicadas.
There you go.

                                      • -

June, that dragonfly is laying eggs.
Cool!
I watched a video of a dragonfly egg hatching in science class from a tree in the school yard.
Awesome!
As the larva grows, it molts several times.
That's totally rad, August!
Most of a dragonfly's life is spent underwater in the nymph stage.
You sound like an entomologist.
What's that?
An expert on bugs.
Oh… thanks!

Hey, their life cycle seems pretty much like ours!
Yes, we spend a long time waiting underground.
We're relatives, aren't we?
Yes. Hey, dragonfly, want to fly with us?
I wish. Too busy listening to Rajio Eikaiwa and laying eggs.
Wow. She's getting the most out of her life.
(get something out of one's life = 自分の人生から何かを得る[学ぶ])

Thank you.
You, you, you, you’re great.
Thank you and you, you, you, you’re great, too.
We, we, we, we’re great!

Those insects really can speak English there.
Sure can.
I'm speechless.
