(8:44)
D: OK, everyone, it's time for practice.
R: Now, for these few phrases, I want you to keep something in mind and that is 米印. That, for me, is the nuance of these phrases. So, "Keep in mind something, something." "Remember that something, something." "Be aware that something, something." These all have that very 米印 kind of feel to them. So, keep that in mind as you practice.

D: Woo, nice one. OK guys, here is the first.

  • Keep in mind that there's no free Wi-Fi.

And again,

  • Keep in mind that there's no free Wi-Fi.

R: OK, let's continue.

  • Remember that this is just practice.

One more time.

  • Remember that this is just practice.

D: Good work, so far. This next one is quite formal and you're more likely to see it in written English, but it's good to practice. So, let's try.

  • Be aware that your performance is being evaluated.

Woo, that's long. Let's try again.

  • Be aware that your performance is being evaluated.

R: Great. Now this last one is also found more often written, but as always, let's practice.

  • Note that attendance is a factor in your final grade.

One more time,

  • Note that attendance is a factor in your final grade.

(10:44)
D: That brings me back to my university classes. Great job, everyone.
R: You're all fantastic, but remember that you don't have to be perfect.

O: Hey, guys, why can't you order risotto when you don't have much time?
D: Oh, well, a good risotto at a restaurant takes at least 20 minutes. You won't have time to eat.
O: But it takes only 3 minutes to finish it all, you know, for me.

============================
◆ Typical Expressions / Practice
============================
(9:23)
D: OK, everyone, it's time for practice. Are you ready?
R: Now, these expressions can show a lot of care. So today, I want you guys to try to feel that care with your body as you're practicing these sentences. OK?
さて、これらの表現は多くの気遣いを示すことができる。だから今日は、これらの文章を練習しながら、その気遣いを体で感じてみてほしい。

D: That's right. These are great examples of other oriented speech. Let's get started. Here's the first.

  • Don't forget to turn off the lights.

Here's one more.

  • Don't forget to bring your ID.

R: Great. Let's continue.

  • Make sure to call me later.

Let's try another one.

  • Make sure that you water the plants.

D: Doing great, everyone. Let's keep it up.

  • It's important to get a good night's sleep.

And another...

  • It's important that you drink enough water.

R: Great and let's try one more.

  • Don't skip stretching before your workout.

This is very important. You'll get a pulled muscle if you do. Let's try that one more time.

  • Don't skip stretching before your workout.

(You'll get a pulled muscle if you do. = それをすると [ストレッチをサボると]、肉離れを起こすよ)

(10:53)
R: Excellent work, everyone.
D: Very nice job. So, don't forget to keep practicing and make sure to practice every day, OK?
R: OK, OK, that's enough David. I think everybody can see how much you care.

==========
◆ Ending

O: Hey, guys, remember to get your yearly health checkup. It's important.
D: Oh, just thinking about it makes my blood pressure rise.
R: Well, that's no good, but anyway be sure you get checked.

============================
◆ Typical Expressions / Practice
============================
(9:34)
D: All right everyone, it's time for practice. Are you ready to go?
R: I am. Let's go.
D: These first three use "shouldn't," but you don't need to release the "t," shouldn't ask (シュドン アスク), shouldn't (シュドゥン) interrupt. Let's try together.

(release 離す)
Tの音を離して発音する必要はありませんよ。Tの音は飲みこんでしまいましょう。

  • You shouldn't ask personal questions.
  • You shouldn't interrupt people.
  • You shouldn't come here uninvited.

R: OK, now for these next few examples, I wanna (want) us to try practicing with emphasis on the "not" in the sentence. OK? So, let's try together.

  • Don't let your guard down.
  • You mustn't let your guard down.
  • You had better not let your guard down.

That was great, guys.

D: These next phrases use "not to." Listen to the "not to." We have two "t" sounds in a row. This can be difficult to pronounce. So, let's combine them. Tow become one, "not to (ノットゥー), not to (ノットゥー)." All right? Let's practice.

  • Be careful not to leave anything behind.
  • Try not to leave anything behind.
  • Remember not to leave anything behind.

R: OK, let's do two more with "not to."

  • It's better not to worry about that.

D: Yes, that's right. We hear it a lot in daily conversation.
R: Yeah, I agree with Dave.
R: Please don't call me Dave. I found it highly offensive.
R: See?

============================
(10:10)
D: All right, everyone, it's time to practice. Let's get ready to go.
R: All right. Let's start.
D: Our first phrases here use "may." You can say "may," nice and short to be direct or you can stretch "may" out to be softer or show some hesitation. Let's try both patterns together. Here's the first.

  • You may want to hurry up.

OK, now let's stretch that "may" to be a little softer.

  • You may want to reconsider.

Do you feel the difference? Let's try one more.

  • You may want to take the time to really think about it.

R: That was great guys. Let's move on.

  • If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
  • If I were you, I wouldn't give up.
  • If I were you, I wouldn't let this chance slip past.

D: All right. Our next phrases use "Don't even." This is a strong suggestion. So, let's lean in to the verb here. "Don't even try." OK? Let's try it.

(lean 傾ける、もたれる lean in = 前のめりになる この場合はfocus onということ。動詞の部分を力を込めて発音しましょうという意味)

  • Don't even try to fix this by yourself.
  • Don't even think of lying to me.

R: You know what, David, I think we've had enough of practice today. What do you think?
D: Yeah, that's true. We may want to stop here.

(11:58)
R: Great job guys.
