C: OK guys, today we're going to look at "if." As you all know, "if" is the basic conditional. Now, there are two rhythms I want you to focus on here. One is in the pre-position, "if ダダダラ~, ババパパン," or the post-position, "ダダダダン, if ダダダダン." So, we've got lots of examples for you. Here we go!

"If you need help, just call me."
"If you have any problems, just call me."
"If anything serious happens, just call me."

R: OK, let's continue. Remember to keep with the rhythm.
"She'll break up with you if you don't change."

Let's try another one. "She'll break up with you if you aren't going to marry her."

C: OK and the last one, "If you do that again, I go home."
"If you do that again, I'm going home."

(10:20)
R: You guys did excellent. And if you keep practicing, you'll get even better.
C: That's true.

O: If you do that again, I go home.
C: No, no, no, but what did I do?
O: I'm just practicing.
R: Hey Chris, Chris, do it again.

★ going through a phase

R: So, for me, the image of a "phase" is kind of like a tunnel with some specific characteristic. So, for Frankie, it's spending almost all his time with his new friends.

私にとっての「phrase」のイメージは、何か特定の特徴を持ったトンネルのようなものなんです。

C: It's like a period of time when you focus on one particular thing and that will change after the period of time comes to an end. You move on to a next phase and the next phase.

(10:08)
C: OK, are you ready to practice? Let's continue looking at the word "if."
This time, we're looking at "if" introducing some kind of choice.
You are or you are not, you can or you can't, for example.
Let's do lots of examples together. OK, here we go,

"Ask him if he wants to go on a trip with you."
"Ask him if he wants to go on a trip with you."

"Let me know if you're free on Monday."
"Let me know if you can help me."
"Let me know if you can come to my party."

R: The next example is easy. "I can't tell if it's real or not."

So, maybe the person is looking at a diamond or something, right?
Let's try one more time. "I can't tell if it's real or not."

C: OK, a couple more, "I wonder if he still loves me."
So choice, loves me or doesn't love me.
Hmm... Once more, "I wonder if he still loves me.

Last one, "I was wondering if you could help me with my report."
"I was wondering if you could help me with my report."

(11:57)
C: How was that today? Great, I hope.
R: I think you guys did excellent.

R: Yes, you should.
C: Absolutely.
O: I'm just practicing,

This is a very useful word to practice. So, today we're looking at a variety of phrases using "if."
Are you ready to start? Here we go.
"My parents still treat me as if I were a little kid."
"My parents still treat me as if I was a little kid."
"She looks as if she's about to cry."

R: Let's continue. "If only you were here."
This is a really good phrase to memorize.
And one more. "If only I had more money."

C: OK, so up to now we focused on "as if" and "if only."
Now one more, "I don't care even if you have no money."
Let's try that once again, "I don't care even if you have no money."

(10:48)

R: Excellent work.

C: OK guys, it's practice time. Today, we're focusing on the word "as." And the basic image of "as" is equal, equality. It's like linking two overlapping events.

So, let's practice together. "I found it as I was cleaning your room."
Let's try that once more. "I found it as I was cleaning your room."

R: OK, with the next few examples, try imagining this scene in your mind. I think that will help you practice.

"The phone rang as I was going out."
"The phone rang as I was brushing my teeth."
"The phone rang as I was about to eat breakfast."

C: OK, a couple more, "As time passed, we got used to living in our new country."
"As time passed, we got used to living in our new country."

R: And our last example, "As it started to rain hard, we canceled the barbecue."
"As it started to rain hard, we canceled the barbecue."

(10:50)
C: Well done, guys.

O: Yeah.
C: For me, they just get in the way when I'm playing sports, you know.

(get in the way 妨げになる、邪魔になる)

O: Hey guys, there are some overprotective boyfriends, right?
R: Well, I can tell you this. I'd rather get bitten by an insect than have a boyfriend like that.
C: Yeah, you know I think, the right way is to have a good balance between overprotective and giving freedom. That's my opinion.
