C: Hi guys, Chris McVay here. Roza...
R: Huh?
C: They say "Curiosity killed the cat," but I think it's good to be curious. What about you?
R: I think so, too.
C: Hmm... Anyway, let's get started.

(Curiosity killed the cat. 好奇心は身を滅ぼす)

(10:15)
C: OK guys, are you ready to practice? Today, let's focus on the word "and" as a basic conjunction. The main thing here is to catch the rhythm of the sentence in order to achieve a smooth flow, A シュー B, A シュー B. OK, so with that in mind, let's practice.

Here we go. "John and Mary"
"you and me"
"a cup and saucer"
"bread and butter"
"He's gentle and kind."
"I sang and danced."

R: Let's continue. "I made a sandwich quickly and ate it."
Here it's very clear that there's a time relationship, right? I made a sandwich and then, I ate it.
Let's try one more time. "I made a sandwich quickly and ate it."

C: OK, one more, "Practice hard, and you'll improve."
"Practice hard, and you'll improve."

(11:40)
C: That's what we tell you all the time, right?
R: That's right.
C: Good job.
R: That was excellent.

"Bob and Mary"
R: So here, we're saying "Bob and Mary are coming" instead of "will come," because this is talking about set plans.

◆ Feel English / Practice

(9:28)
C: It's practice time. Today, let's practice another linking word, namely "or." Now, once again, rhythm is the really important thing here. You've got to catch that rhythm. But this time, "or" indicates a choice, so choice is the key word, A or B, A or B.

OK, here we go. "Which color do you like, red or bule?"
Red, choose, choose, choose or blue.
Another one, "I'm not sure if that was brave or stupid."
Next one, "Do you agree or disagree?"

R: Here's the couple more. "Uluru or Ayers Rock, is sacred to Aboriginal people."
Next one, "50 or 60 people attended the party."

C: OK, continuing on, "either John or Mary"
"I don't care whether you're exhausted or not."
"whether you like it or not"
"for better or for worse"

R: That was great. Now, let's do one last example.
"You have to, or it'll keep making that noise."

C: OK, that one is directly from the dialogue, isn't it, Roza?
R: It is. So, let's try it one more time.
"You have to, or it'll keep making that noise."

(11:30)
C: OK guys. Wonderful! Well done.
R: Excellent work.

O: Hey Chris, taxi drivers in London are so good, aren't they?
C: They're amazing. Did you know they have to take a special test called "The Knowledge," which is said to be the most difficult test in the world.
O: Really?
C: They have to know the tiny streets and every landmark. Oh, amazing.

◆ Opening
===========
(0:18)
R: Hey Chris, that jacket is quite bright, but surprisingly it suits you.
C: Well, you know, I wanted to change my image. So, there you go.
R: Akino Roza here.
C: Chris McVay here.

=====================
◆ Feel English / Practice
=====================
(9:25)
C: It's practice, practice, practice time. Today, we're going to practice another conjunction "but." Now, the main point to remember about "but" is that it blocks the flow.

I like him バフッbut, stop, and then the sentence moves off in another direction. "I hate his sense of humor." So, thisバフッblocking the flow image, keep in your mind, OK?

Here we go. "strict but kind"
"not a doctor but a teacher"
"He spoke Japanese but couldn't read it."

R: And the next line is when the "but" comes in. So, listen for that.
"How about a bunch of roses for your girlfriend's birthday?"
C: "But we split up last week."

C: OK, some more, "Excuse me, but can you turn the music down, please?"
"Sorry, but can you turn the music down, please?"
R: And our last example, "Yes, but have you taken into account the maintenance costs?"
"Yeah, but have you taken into account the maintenance costs?"

(11:04)
C: Well done, guys.
R: You did great, but keep in mind, you still need to practice, practice, practice.

==========
◆ Ending
==========
(14:20)
O: A bunch of roses for a birthday present... impressive, isn't it?
C: Well, I think my generation would find it romantic.
R: Well, I find it a waste. I would much prefer something luxurious that maybe I wouldn't buy for myself like a luxury towel.

===========
◆ Opening
===========
(0:18)
R: Hey everyone, this is Akino Roza. Are you ready for today's lesson? Because we're about to get started.
C: Hi guys, Chris McVay here. Let's get started.

=====================
◆ Feel English / Practice
=====================
(9:33)
C: OK guys, are you ready to practice? Today, let's look at another connecting word "because."
Now, the main feature of "because" is, as always, we should focus on the rhythm of the sentence, A シューッB. And in this case, "because" introduces a strong reason or cause. So, we have A "because" reason or cause.

So, that flow, let's keep that flow in mind. Here we go.
"I broke up with her because she's so self-centered."

I broke up with her... flow... "because" reason, she's so self-centered. So, let's try once more. "I broke up with her because she's so self-centered."

R: Let's continue. "I married him not because he's rich, but because he's kind."
So, we had two in there, right? Let's do that one more time.
"I married him not because he's rich, but because he's kind."

R: One more, "Did you marry him just because he's good-looking?"
"Did you marry him just because he's good-looking?"

C: OK, continuing on. "This house is always messy because of you."
Once more. "This house is always messy because of you."

R: And our last example.
C: "I gained weight."
R: "That's because you don't exercise at all."

C: Shall we try that once more? "I gained weight."
"That's because you don't exercise at all."

(11:44)
C: Well done, guys.
R: That's because they are very serious about their English study.

==========
◆ Ending
==========
(14:35)
R: Hey guys, I eat lots of vegetables because they are good for my health.
C: Well, that may be true, but you eat lots of snacks, too, right?

O: Uh... I usually take a taxi.
C: Oh, I don't. I usually squeeze myself into a capsule hotel room.
O: Oh, you stay at a capsule hotel? I wouldn't fit in there.
