I’m selling cookies to raise money for a charity.
(cookies のところcar keys に聞こえますが、カラス語なので……)
How much are they?
2,000 yen a dozen
If ask me, that’s a bit too overpriced.
That may be true, but it’s for a good cause. All proceeds go to children in need.
In that case, give me 3 dozen.
That’s very generous of you. Thanks.

Thanks.
Well, how much have you raised? How much money have you raised so far?
300 dollars and crowing.

Have you ever worked for a charity or given to a charity, Katie?
Umm… yes. After the Kobe earthquake I started the charity, which raised money for ARK for the animals that were displaced from the earthquake and now I’m a little busy so basically, every year, I have quite a few organizations that I give money to.

(ARK = Animal Refuge Kansai)

You are there.
Yes, I was.
19…
95…
95… I see. How about you, Jeff? Have you ever worked for a charity or given to a charity?
Umm… not necessarily in the organized charity but I play Santa Clause every year.
Oh!
Oh, you do?
Yes, for children in need.
Wow!
I go out and say, “Ho ho ho!,” and the kids love me.
Very nice.
I’m sure they do. I’m sure they do.
And that’s a lot of fun. I enjoy doing that.
That’s great.
Well, I’ve been very aware of uh.. what’s happening in Fukushima and other disaster areas and I’ve been giving what little I have…
Yes.
… to uh… different organizations. Yeah, I feel there are so many ways to help.
Yes.
That’s true.
Well, sadly it’s time to close the program.
Oh!
Oh, well, that may be true but …
It’s for a good cause.
It’s for a good cause.

You want me to continue?
Sure.
Impossibility, Sorry.

                                                                              • -

I see you’re not happy with our current Mayor Smith.
I like Mayor Smith.
Oh, yeah?
Oh, yeah. But what has he done for our community?
Good point, Chary. He has not done much.
Dan Hamilton will be the one, I know, to put our sleepy town back on the map.
Do you think so?
Absolutely, Kathy. He’ll get the job done all the way.
I made up my mind, Chary. I’m voting for the guy.
Whose name is Smith?
No, Hamilton.
Right on.
Right on.

What can I say… to a wonderful piece like that?
Wow!
Well, time to go.
Oh! I’m voting for continuing the show.
Here, here!
Not ending.
Two to one. Well, here’s the new rule.
What?
Minority rules.
Oh.

                                                                                            • -

So, like, what do you think, Shannon?
Yeah, it’s nice, but like …
Like what? You don’t like it?
Don’t get me wrong, but like… that color doesn’t do you justice.
Oh, my… Yes, you’re right. I’ve never looked good in red.
Yeah. Oh, my god! This blue dress is so you, Shelly.
Oh, (come on / kinda) like this is just way more awesome.
And (right) it’s half off.
Oh, my gosh. It’s a total steal.

Yeah?
Oh, year. It’s so great. I love shopping.

You know… Don’t get us wrong but speaking like…
Speaking like a teenage…
Yeah!
… does you justice.
Yeah.
Oh, don’t get me wrong but I’m not a teenager.
No?
No. I haven’t been one for about 10 years.
Oh, okay. That figures.
Oh? Wait a minute. Ten years?
Stop counting. Let’s… let’s finish the program.

                                                                                                  • -

I’ll tell you what, take those aluminum cans to the redemption center.
But dad, my friends are waiting for me.
Your friends can wait.
Do I have to?
Look at it this way, if you recycle 50 pounds of soda cans, you’ll make 25 dollars.
That’s easy money.
I’m glad you see it that way.

Take your soda cans to the redemption center today.
Beer cans are also welcome.

No discrimination.
Sounds like a commercial.

Speaking of gas money…
Uh-huh.
Did you have to make gas money as a teenager or like him?
Oh, yes, you want to get a car as soon as you can you have to have a car. That represents independence.

So how did you make gas money?
I worked in a supermarket and I mowed lawns.
Wow!

How about you, Katie?
Well, yeah. I started baby sitting and then worked in this restaurant and I also worked in the department store.
Wow!
Actually, I’ve been working since I was eleven.
Really?
It’s time for me to retire.
Oh, don’t retire.
I’ve been in debt since I was fourteen.
Oh, my goodness.

How about you, Ken?
Well, I didn’t have to worry about that kind of money because I didn’t drive.
All right.
Oh, in Japan you don’t have to so much
So pocket money.. How did you get pocket money?
I worked in a supermarket.
Oh, you do?
High school…. When I was in high school
I just got a license about seven years ago.
Oh!
I mean drivers license, yes
