(8:47)
R: OK, everyone, it's time to practice. For today's practice, I want you to try to memorize these phrases in chunks especially phrases like "It's unlikely that ..." or "There is little chance that ...." That will help you sound much more natural, and smooth when you speak.

D: All right, everyone. Let's jump in. Here's our first.

  • It's unlikely that he hasn't noticed.
  • He is unlikely to have forgotten.

R: Great, let's continue.

  • It's doubtful that I'll be selected.

D: OK, continuing on.

  • There's little chance that this can be repaired.
  • There's little chance this can be repaired.

Here's another.

  • There's not much hope of fixing the damage.

R: OK, and our last example.

  • He hasn't got a prayer of succeeding.

And one more variation.

===========
◆ Opening
===========
(0:07)
O: Hey, Roza, do you believe in reincarnation?
R: Yeah. How about you?
O: I do, too.

(reincarnation = 生まれ変わり、rebirth)

R: This is Akino Roza.
D: And I'm David Evans. I wonder what I was in a past life.
O: Giraffe.

============================
◆ Typical Expressions / Practice
============================
(8:22)
D: OK, everyone, it's time for today's practice. Lots of good phrases today for expressing how unbelievable or impossible something can be.

R: Today, I want you to have fun by putting emotion into your practice session. So, let's try together.

D: All right. Here we go.

  • It's impossible that this painting is real.

Do you hear how I extend the "im" in impossible just a little bit? That's how you stretch and emphasize how impossible this situation is. Here's one more.

  • It's impossible to imagine such a thing.

R: Let's continue.

  • That's impossible.

Let's try another one.

  • That can't be true.

D: Great work. Let's keep going.

  • Not a chance.
  • No way.

Let's try one more time.

  • No way.

(9:39)
R: Hey, David, is the practice section over already?
D: No way, not a chance. That's impossible.

==========
◆ Ending
==========
(14:29)
R: Sensei, it's impossible that you have an interesting ending today. It's beyond your ability.
O: Yeah, not a chance.
D: But, don't give up. If you give up, that's the end of the game.
O: OK, let's end this lesson.

(0:20)
R: Hey, everyone, this is Akino Roza.
D: And I'm David Evans.

O: What's that?
D: I think there is a turkey in here.

============================
◆ Typical Expressions / Practice
============================
(9:40)
R: OK, everyone, it's time to practice. Today's phrases are short. So, I want you to close your eyes. Don't think about it, and just repeat after us. Feel the phrases with your body as you are saying them.

D: Spot on, Roza. OK, everyone, let's jump right in.

  • That's right.
  • That's correct.
  • You're right.
  • You're correct.
  • That's true.

R: Let's continue.

  • Spot on.
  • Too right.

D: Good work, so far. Let's continue with some more phrases.

  • I suppose you're right.
  • I suppose that's true.
  • I imagine you're not far off.
  • You're probably right.
  • You may be right.
  • That might be true.

(10:55)
R: Hey, guys, you were magnificent today.
D: Ooo, too right.

ラジオ英会話 Lesson 149 Thursday, November 16

===========
◆ Opening
===========
(0:22)
R: Hey, everyone, this is Akino Roza. Ready for today's lesson?
D: And I'm David Evans. I know I am. Let's get to it.

===================================
◆ During the Japanese Explanation Part
===================================
★ flame
(2:56)
O: Why does "flame" mean "sweetheart"?
D: Oh, in English, we compare romance to fire quite often.
R: Yeah, so oftentimes you'll hear people say, "My heart burns for you." So "flame" is a very appropriate image.

===========================
◆ Typical Expressions / Practice
===========================
(9:39)
D: All right. It's time for today's practice. Most people don't want to be confrontational. They prefer to be non-confrontational. Today's phrases practice being indirect of or soft about disagreeing with someone.

(confrontational = 対立的な、 behaving in an angry or unfriendly way that is likely to cause an argument)

R: Great explanation, David.
D: OK. Here we go.

  • That's not quite right.
  • That's not exactly right.
  • I don't think that's correct.

And one more.

  • I'm afraid I don't agree with that.

R: Let's continue.

  • I wouldn't say that.

Now for this one, be sure to emphasize the "that." Let's try it again together.

  • I wouldn't say that.

D: Great work. Sometimes, there's more than one answer. These phrases will help you express that. Here we go.

  • There's no clear-cut answer here.
  • I'm not ready to cast my vote on that.

(cast = 投げる、投じる, register, vote, send out)

And one more.

  • I haven't taken a side on that yet.

All right, let's go one more time.

  • I haven't taken a side on that yet.

(11:18)
D: Great job, everyone.
R: I'm afraid I don't agree with that, David.
D: Really? Why not?
R: Because I think everyone did absolutely fantastic!
D: Ah… I can get on board with that.

(I can get on board with that. = I agree with that.)

==========
◆ Ending
==========
(14:24)
O: Ou! That's not exactly right.
D: Yeah, Roza, I think you're missing "at all."

D: There you go.
R: Ah, you are being confrontational.

ラジオ英会話 Lesson 150 Friday, November 17

===========
◆ Opening
===========
(0:15)
R: Hey, everyone. It's Friday again. That means it's time to review. This is Akino Roza.
D: And I'm David Evans. It's time for that sweet, sweet review.

==========
◆ Ending
==========
(14:06)
O: Hey, guys, there are people who are always late, right?
R: Yeah, you know, and actually I'm one of those people who struggles with being on time. I've found that making a plan before my plan. For example, to read my book for 30 minutes makes it easier to be on time, because even if I'm late, I'm still early.

D: I found with people that are always late, it's good to tell them the event starts 30 minutes before it actually does. So, if we're meeting up at 7, I'll tell them to come by 6:30.
R: That's a good idea, too, David.
D: Just, don't tell them that.
