ラジオ英会話 Lesson 141 Monday, November 6

===========
◆ Opening
===========
(0:26)
R: Hey, everyone, this is Akino Roza. How are you feeling about your English studies? Don't worry, this lesson will be a success.

D: Hi, everyone, and I'm David Evans. That's right, folks, you'll do great. Just keep at it. Here we go.

============================
◆ Typical Expressions / Practice
============================
(8:45)
D: All right, everyone, it's time for today's practice. Today's phrases use expressions of confidence, "must," "should," "has to." So, use your accent to express your confidence in the truth of these statements. OK?

R: These phrases are short. So, try to work on connecting the words as you practice.

D: All right. Let's jump right in. Here's our first.

  • Excuse me, you must be David.

And another,

  • Lucy must have forgotten to lock the door.

R: OK, let’s continue.

  • There should be no problem.

Next example.

  • Ben should win first prize.
                                        • -

(first prize の前に the は要らないの?)

(1) Ben should win first prize."
(2) Ben should win the first prize."
両方の文は基本的に正しいですが、微妙な違いがあります。
1番目の文では、単に「Benは一等賞を獲得すべきだ」と言っています。つまり、どの一等賞かを特定していません。

2番目の文では、「Benは一番の賞を獲得すべきだ」となり、具体的な賞が「the first prize」であることを示しています。一般的には、特定の賞を指す場合には「the」を使うことが一般的ですが、文脈によっては「first prize」だけで十分な場合もあります。

D: All right, and here's one more using "has to."

  • That lady has to be the one in charge.

Do you hear how I emphasize "has to"? ... really lean into it. Let's try one more time.

(lean into 協調を置く)

  • That lady has to be the one in charge.

(10:03)
R: Well, guys, you must have practiced a lot because you are doing great.
D: You should get there in no time. Keep it up.

(14:08)
O: Using salt instead of sugar... Have you ever actually done that, David?
D: Yes, yes, this is one of my own life experiences. Uh... I made a batch of cookies with my girlfriend in high school, only to discover that we used salt instead of sugar. It was a salty, salty experience.

(batch of ひとかまど、ひと焼き分)

R: Hey, everyone, this is Akino Roza.
D: And I'm David Evans. I lose clothes only to find I'm wearing them.

(I lose clothes only to find I'm wearing them.

この表現は、人々が日常生活で物事を見落とすことや、当たり前のことを忘れることについてのユーモラスな観察を示唆しています。)

(9:28)
R: OK, everyone, it's time to practice. Now today, we'll be talking about being sure. So, be sure to emphasize those parts when you practice.

D: All right. Let's jump right in. Here is our first.

  • I'm sure he'll understand.
  • I'm certain he'll understand.
  • I'm convinced he'll understand.

Did you hear my accent with "convinced"? .... really lean into that "vin" in the middle.

R: OK, let's continue.

  • He is sure to win.

Emphasizing the word "sure" as well as saying the word slower also emphasizes it. Let's try another version.

  • He is bound to win.

D: I like how the explosive "b" sound makes the impact of that word much stronger.

R: Good point, David.
D: All right, let's continue.

  • Without a shadow of a doubt they'll win.
  • Beyond a shadow of a doubt they'll win.
  • In all likelihood they'll win.

R: OK, our last example.

  • I guarantee you she'll say yes.

Let's try that one more time.

  • I guarantee you she'll say yes.

(11:08)
R: You were excellent.
D: Very nice job.

(extended family = a family consisting of the nuclear family and their blood relatives. 核家族とその血縁者から成る家族。)

O: Really?
R: How tall are you?
D: I'm 6'2" (six-foot-two), 187cm (a hundred and eighty-seven centimeters).
O: All right, just a bit taller than a giraffe, right?

◆ Typical Expressions / Practice

(9:44)
D: All right, let's jump into today's practice. These phrases talk about likelihood and probability yet again. So, let's get to it.

(yet again = またまた。yet againは、すでに何度も起きていることが再び起こった時に使う表現)

R: We can really add extra nuance to our phrases by choosing to lengthen or shorten certain words.
(ある単語を長くしたり短くしたりすることで、フレーズにニュアンスを加えることができます。)
So, pay attention to that, and let's try together.
D: All right, here we go.

  • She may be late.
  • She may or may not be late.

R: OK, next example.

  • She might be late.

Let's try that one more time with the shortened "might."

  • She might be late.

Do you feel the difference in nuance between those two?

D: All right. Let's continue.

D: I've lived here for 18 years; I'm still not used to Tokyo's train system.
O: How about you, Roza?
R: Of course, Tokyo's train system is very convenient but don't underestimate the bus system either.
(もちろん、東京の電車はとても便利だが、バスも侮れない。)
