(0:09)
O: Never give up!
R: There is no finish line on your learning journey. Akino Roza here.
D: And I'm David Evans. That's right, keep going, one small hurdle at a time.

(at a time = 一度に)

=======================
◆ Pronunciation Polish
=======================
(12:52)
D: OK, don't give up just yet. We're not finished. We still have to polish our pronunciation. So, let's dive right in. Here's today's phrase.

  • It was hard to finish that movie.
  • It was hard to finish that movie.

All right. There are three main points we'll focus on today. First is "It" at the start. Let's listen to the sound. OK?

  • It (イッ!)
  • It (イッ!)

The "t" at the end has disappeared. It's nice and short. Let's add "was" for some extra practice.

  • It was
  • It was

Very nice. Next, we have "hard to." The "d" at the end will disappear, and will join the "r" and "t" sounds together.

  • hard to
  • hard to

All right. Last up is "that." The "t" at the end will disappear, so...

  • that (ダッ!)
  • that (ダッ!)
  • that movie
  • that movie

All right. Let's make some chunks and build up.

  • It was hard to
  • It was hard to
  • It was hard to finish that movie.

ラジオ英会話  Lesson 88  Wednesday, August 6 & 13

=============
◆ Opening
=============
(0:15)
R: Akino Roza here.
D: And I'm David Evans. Hey, Roza, have you been?
R: I actually have not.
D: Oh, I have just once.
O: Hmm...

=======================
◆ Pronunciation Polish
=======================
(12:53)
R: OK guys, you know what time it is? It's time to polish our pronunciation. Today's phrase is really short. Here it is.

  • Times have changed.
  • Times have changed.

As you can see, it's only three words, and it works better if we practice it all together connected. So, that's what we're gonna do. We'll focus mainly on two points, the weak "h" in "have," and the disappearing "d" in "changed," like this.

  • Times have changed. (タイムスァヴ チェィンジトッゥ)

All right, let's try it together. Repeat after me.

  • Times have (タイムスァヴ)
  • Times have (タイムスァヴ)

Great! Now,

  • changed
  • changed

One more time.

  • changed

All right. Now, let's practice all together.

  • Times have changed. (タイムスァヴ チェィンジトゥッ)
  • Times have changed. (タイムスァヴ チェィンジトゥッ)

As a side note, be careful about the pronunciation of "changed." Make sure you pronounce it like this.

(As a side note = ついでに言うと、ちなみに、補足ですが)

  • changed (チェィ~ンジトゥッ)
  • changed (チェィ~ンジトゥッ)
  • changed (チェィンジトゥッ)
  • Times have changed. (タイムスァヴ チェィンジトゥッ)
  • Times have changed. (タイムスァヴ チェィンジトゥッ)

You're doing fantastic. I'm so proud of you.

◆ Ending
==============
(14:30)
R: The witch changed the frog into a prince.

D: Well, I suppose that depends on the personality of the frog.
R: Good point.

ちょこっと解説:
ここ意味がわからなかったという人が多いので……

テキストp.54 ②の右側あたりに The witch changed the frog into a prince. という英文が掲載されています。オリジナルの童話の中では、The witch changed the prince into a frog. 「魔女が王子様をカエルに変えた」になっているはずなのに、どうして?とローザさんが疑問を投げかけています。

大西先生: 良い魔女が、カエルを王子様に変身させてあげたんだよ~。
Davidさん: そうだなあ、まあそれはカエルの性格次第だと思うよ。
Rozaさん: あ、それ言えてる!

性格の良いカエルなら王子様になれるかもしれないけど、性格が悪いとねえ~……ということなのでしょう。

=======================
◆ Pronunciation Polish
=======================
(13:01)
D: Thank you for riding the pronunciation polish express bound for native pronunciation. The next stop is today's phrase. Here it is.

  • We need to take the Heathrow Express.
  • We need to take the Heathrow Express.

All right. So, just like that express train, let's feel the pull between "need" and "to."
「need」と「to」の間の引きつけ(音のつながり)を感じてみましょう。

  • need to (ニーットゥッ)
  • need to (ニーットゥッ)
  • need to take
  • need to take
  • We need to take
  • We need to take
  • We need to take the Heathrow Express.
  • We need to take the Heathrow Express.

All right. You're moving at high speed towards a native pronunciation. Stick with it!

◆ Ending
============
(14:13)
O: Hey guys, have you ever been to Wakayama?
R: Yeah, I actually went there for the first time the other day to see a guy with some horses.
O: Oh.
D: I've never actually had the chance. What shouldn't I miss when I go?
R: Your train. =(Don't miss your train.)
D: Ah, true!

ここのオチ、面白かったですね。
D: 行く機会がなかったんですよ。行ったときに見逃しちゃいけないもの(おすすめ)は何ですか?
R: 電車に乗り遅れたらダメよ。

(miss には、いろいろな意味があります。「見逃す/見落とす」「(誰かがいなくて)寂しい」や「(乗り物に)乗り遅れる」という意味があるので、言葉遊びをしています。)
