(8:48)
D: OK everyone, it's practice time. Now, I can already hear your question. Why not just regular 疑問文? It's easy. It's about feeling and emotion. These questions show unexpected surprise, suspicion and seek confirmation. They're very useful. So, let's practice and add them to your tool kit.
R: All right, repeat after us.

  • You asked for the check? Don't you want to have dessert?
  • You asked for the check? Don't you want to have dessert?

D: Just like sensei said, don't forget to add emotion to these phrases. All right? Here's our next one.

One more time.

R: And one more.

  • Please, stop. Haven't you done enough?
  • Please, stop. Haven't you done enough?

=============
◆ Opening
=============
(0:08)
D: Oh, what do you like about them?
R: Hey everyone, Akino Roza here.
D: And I'm David Evans.

=============
◆ Practice
=============
(8:53)
D: OK everyone, today's practice is one of my favorites. It's not a full-on question. It's like a statement or a command with a little confirmation at the end. These are very common in casual conversation. So, it's important to master them and use them as much as you can.

R: All right. So, let's begin.

  • Leave it to me, OK?
  • Leave it to me, OK?
  • So, you had a good time, huh?
  • So, you had a good time, huh?

D: Roza, that "huh?" doesn't mean you're angry, does it?
R: Not at all.
D: All right, good. Let's continue.

  • This is delicious, yeah?
  • This is delicious, no?
  • This is delicious, don't you think?

R: OK and let's do a few more.

  • Close the door, will you?
  • Close the door, would you?
  • Close the door, could you?
  • Close the door, won't you?

============
◆ Ending
============
(14:36)
R: Repeat after us. Stapler.
D: Stapler.
O: Stapler.

Lesson 233 Wednesday, March 19

=============
◆ Opening
=============
(0:16)
R: Akino Roza here.
D: And I'm David Evans.

She is very assertive in meetings.
He can be a bit too assertive sometimes.

=============
◆ Practice
=============
(8:44)
D: Uh... In English, we call these little questions, tag questions because we clip them onto the end of a statement. The nuance is different depending on if the intonation is rising or declining. So, let's practice them and master the feeling together. OK?
R: We'll practice both intonations. So, repeat after us.

  • Lucy likes it, doesn't she?
  • Lucy likes it, doesn't she?

D: Great work. Here's our next.

  • Nancy hasn't been to Tokyo, has she?
  • Nancy hasn't been to Tokyo, has she?

R: And one more example. This one, we'll just practice going up.

  • I'm your friend, aren't I?
  • I'm your friend, am I not?

==============
◆ Ending
==============
(14:41)
R: You'll keep practicing even after the lesson ends, won't you?
D: Ooo!

Lesson 234 Thursday, March 13

=============
◆ Opening
=============
(0:08)
O: Hey guys, if there was an undo button in life, what would you undo?
R: I'm pretty happy with the way things are, so nothing.
D: Uh... sometimes my jokes don't, uh... they don't hit.
O: [Laughter]
D: I'd go back in and choose a different punch line.
R: You know what? In that case, I would undo a lot of sensei's openings.
R: Akino Roza here.
D: And I'm David Evans.

(a punch line = オチ A punch line is the most important or funny part of a joke. It is the last part that makes people laugh. The punch line is the surprise or funny ending that makes the joke complete.)

=============
◆ Practice
=============
(9:15)
R: OK everyone, it is time to practice. Today we'll just be practicing the あいづち. So, it's pretty easy. We want you to focus on the feeling of it and having it come out of your mouth naturally without thinking. OK?

(having it come out of your mouth naturally = それが自然に口から出るようにすること)

Q: it comes
"having it come out" の文法
ここでの "having it come out" は 「使役構文 (causative structure)」 に近い形で使われています。
"have + 目的語 (it) + 動詞の原形 (come out)"

D: All right. Here we go.

  • Oh, are you?
  • Oh, are you?

R: Next one.

  • Oh, do you?
  • Oh, do you?

D: And one more.

  • Oh, have you?
  • Oh, have you?

============
◆ Ending
============
(14:39)
R: I'm sure you guys have practiced a lot. So, keep on doing what you are doing.
D: Oh, have we? Oh, we have.

O: Alien, that was a masterpiece, wasn't it? I saw that uh... in a theatre when I was a student.
D: Oh really? That was the first movie that my parents told me I wasn't allowed to watch. We were at a rental shop and I saw the egg, I said, "Oh, maybe it's about dinosaurs, I wanna watch." ... and they said "Absolutely not!"
R: Wow, Sensei, when you were a student... so, a really, really, really, really long time ago.
