ラジオ英会話 Lesson 96 Monday, August 22

===========
◆ Opening
===========
(0:21)
R: Phew! Well, I'm glad that's over. Hey, guys, Akino Roza here.
C: Chris McVay here. Let's get started.

=====================
◆ Feel English / Practice
=====================
(9:17)
C: OK guys, it's time to practice. We're starting practicing the word "over." We'll be looking at a variety of usages, but today let's stick with the basic image of a bridge or an arch. Get that right in front of your head as we practice these sentences. Are you ready?

R: And think in English. OK guys?

(9:37)
C: Great advice, Roza. Here we go, "over the entrance"
"over the fireplace"
"over 40"
(9:52)
C: Can you feel the arch there? "over 75 mph (miles per hour)"

(10:00)
R: Continuing on, "Chris will come over for dinner today."
(10:08)
R: You can feel the distance in that one, right? "Chris will come over for dinner today."

(10:16)
C: OK, and here is another one, "He got over his breakup with Masami."
(10:25)
C: You can imagine here the arch from the moment of the breakup where he feels terrible to now and he is over it. So, with that feeling in mind, once more together, "He got over his breakup with Masami."

(10:41)
R: And the last couple of examples, "look over the report."
"turn over the page"

(10:53)
R: Great job guys.
C: Excellent! Well done.

==========
◆ Ending
==========
(14:24)
O: Hey, guys, what do you do when you want to get over a breakup?
R: Well, I’ll spend time with my good friends or horses. I mean you have to do something fun, right?
C: Well, I have no idea because I've never experienced the breakup.

ラジオ英会話 Lesson 97 Tuesday, August 23

===========
◆ Opening
===========
(0:17)
R: Akino Roza here.
C: Well, on a different note, I have to tell our listeners a secret that I have a million-dollar view here in the studio of Roza. Slightly spoiled by the view of Onishi-sensei. Anyway, let's get started.

(on a different note それはそうと、話は変わりますが)
(spoil by the view 目障りになる、眺望を台無しにする)

=====================
◆ Feel English / Practice
=====================
(9:41)
C: OK guys. It's practice time. And once again, we are looking at the preposition "over." Now I want you to keep the basic image we already talked about of an arch or a bridge, but then you will see how it naturally leads to the meaning of cover and also of rolling.

So, let’s look at some of those examples.
Here we go, "Soon, we'll be able to look over Hakodate City at night."

(10:13)
Here, I want you to imagine this arch but covering, moving all over Hakodate City from one end to the next.

(from one end to the next 端から次へ)

(10:21)
Here we go, once more, "Soon, we'll be able to look over Hakodate City at night."

(10:31)
R: And here are some more examples, "all over the world."
"over the weekend"
And one more, "Let's talk over a cup of coffee."

(10:49)
C: OK, now let's focus on this rolling image, over and over and over like, "roll over."
"over again"
"go over"
And the last one, "think it over."
You don't just think for one second, hmm … it's there in your mind … hmm … thinking, thinking, thinking, so, the image of rolling is clear, "think it over."

(11:19)
C: Well done guys. Great.
R: Fantastic!

==========
◆ Ending
==========
(14:26)
O: Hey, Roza, what would you say if I said, "Let me put my jacket over you."
C: Oh, you've become a British gentleman all of a sudden, eh?
R: Well, in that case, I would say, "Oh, you are so very kind, but no thank you."

ラジオ英会話 Lesson 98 Wednesday, August 24

===========
◆ Opening
===========
(0:25)
R: Hey, guys, this is Akino Roza. Hey, Chris, how about going over to Big West Coffee after this recording is over?
C: Sounds great. I'm all for it. Chris McVay here.

(I'm all for it. 大賛成)

=====================
◆ Feel English / Practice
=====================
(9:09)
C: Hey, guys, it's practice time again. Today is our last practice of the preposition "over." And this time, I still want you to keep the same image of an arch or a bridge, but now we are going to move to the meaning of finished.
(9:23)
So, you can imagine crossing the bridge, now the bridge is behind you. It's gone, off you go. So, that image, keep that in mind as we practice today.

(9:32)
R: And remember, think in English.
(9:34)
C: OK, let's start, "It's over. Forget her."
(9:42)
C: There was the start of the relationship, the relationship keeps going and then, over the bridge, finished. "It's over. Forget her."

(9:53)
R: Next example, "There is no use crying over spilt milk."
(10:02)
R: Here, instead of the relationship in the previous example, we're talking about spilt milk, so we are going over that, right?

R: Let's try again with that in mind, "There is no use crying over spilt milk."

(10:19)
C: It's a nice proverb for our listeners to remember, right?
R: Hmm…
C: OK, here we go, the last lot.
"over 40"
"get over ~"
"all over the place"
"think it over"

(10:40)
R: That was great, guys.
C: Keep practicing them.

==========
◆ Ending
==========
(14:19)
O: Hey guys, nobody believes I'm over 40.
R: I know with the way you act sometimes I swear you're 12 years old.
C: And you know what, the last time I was in the States, I went to a bar, and they asked me to show them some ID.

ラジオ英会話 Lesson 99 Thursday, August 25

===========
◆ Opening
===========
(0:28)
R: Akino Roza here.
C: Chris McVay here. Yeah, that's what keeps me healthy. Let's get started.

=====================
◆ Feel English / Practice
=====================
(9:36)
C: OK guys, it's practice time. And today we are looking at "above." Now many students or many learners confuse this with the word "over," which we've already done, but it's quite different.

Here, we're comparing two positions or levels and we use "above" to describe the higher position or level. So, bear all that in mind as we practice.

(bear all that in mind それを全部念頭に置いて)

Here we go, "above sea level"
"above $100"
"above average"
and "above the speed limit"

(10:18)
In all these, it's easy to see one level and its higher, so that's why we use "above."

R: Continuing on, "He is above me in this company."
One more time, "He is above me in this company."

C: "Above all, relax and enjoy yourself."
"Above all else, relax and enjoy yourself."

(10:52)
So, as you can see here, we use "above" because relaxing and enjoying yourself is the most important thing.

R: And the last two, "above suspicion."
(11:04)
So, there's suspicion and you are above it, suspicion doesn't apply.
And the same thing in the next example, "He's above stealing."

(11:16)
R: You guys did a great job.
C: Well done.

==========
◆ Ending
==========
(14:28)
R: Something is appearing above your head.
O: Oh, really? I hope it's not a halo.
C: Well, I'm above bad-mouthing people. So, no comment.

(halo ヘイロウ、ヘイロー - 光の輪が現れる大気光学現象、天使の輪)
(bad-mouthing 口の悪い、不忠実な、人の悪口を言う)
