遠山顕の英会話楽習   Monday, July 5

C: Well, they're polar opposites here.
J: Well, they had different experiences.

(polar 両極、正反対の)

==========

C: Hey!
J: All right.
KCJ: You did it so well. We are so happy. We are over the moon.

C: Jeff...
J: Uh-huh.
C: You are the star.
J: Gotcha!

C: How was the moon?
J: I had a lot of fun.
C: How was the flight?
J: It was very smooth.
C: I wish you would fly me to the moon.
J: I will, Carolyn. I will.
C: You will? When?
J: Someday ...

==========
Say It!
==========
K: Carolyn, are you ready for this?
C: Yeah.
K: Five times in one breath.
C: I'll make sure this isn't any run-of-the-mill practice here.
J: Make it special.
K: Yeah. Let's hear it.

C: It was run-of-the-mill. ×5
K: You did it.

J: All right.
C: Fantastic.
KCJ: That was a home run.

==========

★ が、一方
C: Yes.
C: Well, I'd recommend using the conjunction "while" here.
K: Oh.
C: And it's a good way to show two contrasting ideas.
K: Uh-huh.
C: So, in this case, it would be "Bill had a lot of fun at the party because he got to talk to Noko, while 何々."
K: Oh, I see.

★ パーティーに関して否定的になっています
J: Right. So, if Ray is negative towards parties all the time...
K: Uh-huh.
J: Then you would say "He is negative about parties."
K: Right.
J: But he is only negative about this party. So, we are going to say, "Ray is being negative about the party."
K: Got it.

("being" の後に、形容詞か名詞が続き、「今は...だ、一時的に....だ」という意味で使う)
―――――

C: Bill had a lot of fun at the party because he got to talk to Noko, while Ray is being negative about the party because Jo ignored his hello.

J: I know they did.
C: Hey. Fantastic work.
K: All right.
J: Well done.

===================
In Another Situation!
===================
K: So Carolyn....
C: Uh-huh.
K: What's another situation going to be like this time?
C: Well, they talk in rap.
―――――

B: I had a lot of fun!
R: I was bored to death, Bill.
B: The food was a home run!
R: It was run-of-the-mill.
B: Why are you being so negative?
R: How can you be so positive?
B: I got to talk to Noko.
R: Jo ignored my hello.
B: She likes you. That's why, Ray.
R: Come on. No way!
J: Yes way, Ray.
R: Jo, what did you say?
J: I said I like you.
R: I’ll say I like you too.
KCJ: Yay!

C: That sounded amazing.
J: Don’t know.
K: Oh, yeah. You too.
C: Well, we had a lot of fun today, or rather I had a lot of fun today.

(or rather いやむしろ、というより、もっと厳密に言えば)

J: But time is up. That's a wrap.
K: Well, I'm a little tired so I'm gonna (going to) take a little nap.

K: Wow! He did it.
J: Yeah, professional.
C: Amazing.
K: Great.

=================
Words & Expressions
=================
K: Carolyn, if you had a chest of drawers or that desk...
C: Sure.
K: All right. Which drawer do you put your important things in?
C: The one with a lock on it.
K: Okay. One with a keyhole.
C: Yes.
K: Okay.
C: If there is one.
K: Jeff, how about you?
J: Well, I have some vintage Japanese furniture.
K: Oh, Japanese...
J: I have a Japanese tansu. So, I have a hidden drawer.
C: What?
J: Nobody knows of ... well, now everybody knows.
C: Now we do.
K: Now everybody ...
J: But you don't know where it is. Not yet.
K: So if you go to Jeff's place ...
C: Yeah.
J: It's in the hidden drawer… is the most important thing.
K: Oh, yeah. I have heard about it.
J: Yes.
C: What about you, Ken?
K: Well, I want to put it in the top drawer, I think. Yeah...
C: Ah.
J: Easy access?
K: Yeah. Easy access.

==========
U R the ★
==========
J: All right.
C: Hey, great.
KCJ: That was really nice.

J: All right, Carolyn...
C: Uh-huh.
J: You are the star.
C: Alrighty.

J: Now where is your painting?
C: Ta-da! This is it!
J: Wow. It's really nice!
C: Thank you!
J: Can you paint me one?
C: Actually, this is for you.
J: Oh, thank you. It's big.
C: Uh-huh.

==========
Say It!
==========
K: Jeff, are you ready.
J: Oh, yeah. Jeff rules.
C: He does!
K: Nice start.
J: I don't know. But this is kind of a tongue twister.
K: Oh, it could be.
J: Let's try it.
K: Yeah.

(rule 抜群である、最高である)

J: The ruler rules! ×5
K: Jeff rules.

J: All right.
C: Hey!
KCJ: You rule!

==========
Write It!
==========
★ 直します
J: Oh, yes. There's a very useful word. It's the word "fix."
K: Oh.
J: F-i-x, fix, to fix something.
K: Oh, okay.
J: And in this particular case, "a man fixes his friend's wobbly vintage desk."

★ 一番下の引き出し
C: There are two ways we can go about writing this.
K: OK.
C: For the first way, we can use the word "the," and we can say "the bottom drawer."
J: Uh-huh.
C: So, the whole phrase would be "he also frees up the jammed bottom drawer 何々."
K: Okay.
C: And that's a nice way to write it because we know that "the" here is referring to the vintage desk. But if we want to be more specific, and be clear about what we are talking about, we can also use the pronoun "it." And in that case, it'll be "its jammed bottom drawer."
―――――

J: A man fixes his friend's wobbly vintage desk. He also frees up the jammed bottom drawer with his ruler.

C: A man fixes his friend's wobbly vintage desk. He also frees up its jammed bottom drawer with his ruler.

J: I know they did.
C: Hey, fantastic work.
K: All right.
J: Well done.

===================
In Another Situation!
===================
K: So, Jeff...
J: Uh-huh.
K: What's another situation going to be like this time?
J: Well, a cyborg comes into a dental clinic.
―――――

C: This is my wobbly tooth.
D: Let's see. Yes, it's a little loose.
C: I feel it when I have cyber food.
D: Oh, I can replace it with the latest cyber tooth.
C: Great.
D: There! You've got a sturdy tooth now.
C: Thanks. One more thing...
D: Uh-huh.
C: This tooth is chipped.
D: Oh, I can use this chip-fix. And ... There!
C: Chip-fix hooray!
D: Oh, good one.
―――――

CJ: Hip, hip hooray!
K: OK. Ta-da! This is going to be none wobbly signing out of the program.
J: All right. Gakushu rules.
K: All right.

============
★ Question 1
============
K: OK, Carolyn, back to the question.
C: Right. What is this commercial about?

K: Jeff, what is this commercial about?
J: Simply put, Oscar's Home Furniture.

(simply put 簡単に言えば)

J: And they're having a big clearance sale today.

K: I remember her saying that she wants a new sofa. Could it be a used sofa at a used furniture store?
J: Well, what it means is it's a new sofa to her.
C: Yeah. I think when she says a new sofa, she wants to replace her old sofa.
K: There you go.
C: So she had an old sofa, now she wants a new one, not a used one.

K: OK. Let's move on to the second question, Jeff.
J: OK. Question 2: How much is the gray velvet Kingsman's sofa?

============
★ Question 2
============
K: All right, back to the question, Jeff?
J: Right. How much is the gray velvet Kingsman's sofa?

K: Carolyn, did you happen to catch the right answer?
C: Yeah, I think so.
K: OK. Let's hear it.
C: Eleven-fifty or $1,150 (one thousand one hundred fifty dollars).

K: So, this Kingsman's sofa, how many colors does the sofa come in?
C: Well, there were three colors, right?
J: Uh-huh. Gray.
C: Yeah, that's easy. Because that was in the question.
J: Right. And then the other two are ...?
C: Uh... what was it?
CL: Blue and red.
J: Blue velvet, red velvet. Yeah.
C: Nice.
K: So, that's the sofa she wants, right?
C: I think she likes it but she says, "It's not what I had in mind."
K: Oh, I see. Well, this leads us to, of course, question 3. Carolyn?
C: Sure. Question 3: What's the reclining sofa like?

============
★ Question 3
============
K: OK. Back to that sofa question, Carolyn?
C: Yeah. What's the reclining sofa like?

K: Jeff, did you catch the right answer?
J: Well, it's only 999 (nine ninety-nine) or $999 (nine hundred ninety-nine dollars). That's an incredibly low price.

K: So, this is the sofa she wants?
CJ: Um....
J: Again...
K: No.
C: I mean, again, I think she likes it because she is saying remarkable but I don't think she wants something that big, right?
J: Yeah. She wants something a little smaller.
K: Well, I wonder how the listeners are doing.
J: I'm sure they would say "so far so good."
C: Wow.
K: Okay. Let's move on to the last question.
J: Right. Question 4: What is the woman going to buy?

============
★ Question 4
============
K: OK. Back to the last question.
J: Uh-huh. What is the woman going to buy?

K: Carolyn, what is she going to buy?
C: Hmm, I got this one. The green corduroy daybed.

K: What's the daybed?
C: Like they say, it can be used as a sofa and a bed. Do you guys have a daybed?
J: We don't.
K: We don't either.
C: Oh.
K: How about you?
C: Me neither. But I want one. It looks really comfy.
K: Yes, sounds good, huh?
C: Yeah.
K: Is she going to carry it on her own?
C: No.
J: Oh, no, no, no. Because delivery is free.
C: Wait. Not just free, absolutely free!
J: Absolutely free!
K: OK. Yes.
