このダイアログのplay on words, 言葉遊びは……?
I've got to keep a photo diary.
I've got to (アイヴガラ) と avocado (アボカド)をかけている。
ちょっと苦しいですかね?

C: Hey!
J: All right.
KCJ: Amazing!
C: Jeff...
J: Uh-huh.
C: You are the star.
J: Right.
C: I don't understand the "koan."
J: The answers are many.
C: Why?
J: Eventually you'll get it.
C: Oh, I don't know.
J: Have patience.
==========
Say It!
==========
K: Carolyn, is it a good idea for you to do this or...
C: It actually IS a good idea.
K: All right.
C: Because it's so short.
K: How true. Let's hear it.
C: Alrighty.
C: Good idea! ×5
K: You did it.
J: All right.
C: Awesome!
KCJ: Good going.

★ AにBの育て方を教える
J: Well, we use the word "teach," and the pattern is "teach A how to grow B," or "teach 誰々 how to grow 何々."
K: OK.
J: In this case, "A father teaches his daughter how to grow an avocado plant in a glass."
★ 彼は彼女に、それはいいアイデアだと伝えます
K: He tells her good idea. では、まずいですよね?
C: Yeah, it doesn't sound the most natural to my ears. I would recommend writing "it's" after the word "her." So it would be, "He tells her it's a good idea." That sounds more natural to me.
K: OK.
C: And you can add "that" there if you want to. In that case, it would be "He tells her that it's a good idea."
―――――
C: A father teaches his daughter how to grow an avocado plant in a glass. She is going to keep a photo diary, and he tells her that it's a good idea.
J: A father teaches his daughter how to grow an avocado plant in a glass. She's going to keep a photo diary, and he tells her it's a good idea.
C: All right. You did it.
J: I think so. Yeah.
K: All right.

In Another Situation!
===================
K: So Carolyn...
C: Uh-huh.
K: What's another situation going to be like this time.
C: Well, now, the father is overly excited.
―――――
F: Stab three toothpicks into the seed. Then position the toothpicks on the rim of a glass.
D: Like so?
F: Yes. Make sure the bottom of the seed is half-drowned in water.
D: Okay.
F: Eventually a little root will shoot out. Then a sprout will shoot up at the top.
(shoot out = 飛び出す)
(shoot up = 急に伸びる)
D: Great! I've got to keep a photo diary.
F: Yeah. Give it a stab.
(give it a stab = やってみる to try to do something)
D: Dad, how come you are so excited?
F: I guess because I've been watching action movies for weeks.
D: Oh.
―――――
J: He sounds like he is ready for action.
K: It's gonna (going to) be a huge avocado tree, I'm sure.
C: Yeah.
K: Well, I'm surprisingly or maybe surprisingly it's time to go.
J: Oh, time fries.
C: Uh-huh.
K: Oh, yeah, as usual.

J: Oh, yeah.
C: Hey!
KCJ: You did well.
J: All right. Carolyn ....
C: Uh-huh.
J: You are the star. Great!
J: I'm thinking of entering a contest.
C: What kind of contest?
J: It's a singing contest.
C: Go for it! You'll do well.
J: You think so?
C: Absolutely!
==========
Say It!
==========
K: Okay, Jeff-san.
C: Go for it.
J: OK.
J: Make two dots for his eyes with this marker. ×5
K: Wow! It sounded great!
C: Uh-huh.
J: Better than I thought.
C: Hey!
J: Wow!
KCJ: You make it sound so easy.

★ 孫の男の子
J: Do they usually say that in Japanese or ...?
K: Yeah, 孫の男の子 sounds ... Yeah, okay ....
J: Yeah?
K: ... but usually say 孫.
J: Usually?
K: That sometimes means...
J: Either male or female ... either boy or girl.
K: Uh... male.
J: Oh, okay. All right. Well, we wanna (want to) make sure that the listeners know that it's a small child, so we're gonna (going to) say "little grandson."
K: OK.
★ ……したら出来上がり
C: Well, here, the subject does such and such.
(such and such = これこれしかじか、とか何とか、かくかくしかじか)
K: Uh-huh.
C: And then we add "it's done," or "they're done." So to make this simple, the pattern I'd recommend using is "A does B and it's done." Or "A does B and they're done."
―――――
J: A woman and her little grandson are making a sock puppet together. He glues on the jiggly eyes. She sews on the floppy ears. Then he draws the nose and it's done.
C: A woman and her little grandson are making a sock puppet together. He glues on the jiggly eyes. She sews on the floppy ears. Then he draws the nose and they're done.
J: I think they did pretty well.
C: I think so too. Right on.
J: All right.

In Another Situation!
===================
K: So Jeff...
J: Uh-huh.
K: What's another situation gonna (going to) be like today?
J: Well, this time, they're making a Dracula sock puppet.
―――――
GM: Slip the sock over your hand.
GS: Ah ha ha ha ha ...
GM: Make two big dots for his eyes with this maker.
GS: Okay.
GM: Then take off the sock and glue on these bloodshot eyes.
GS: Can you make sharp fangs?
(fang = 牙 a large sharp tooth, especially a canine tooth of a dog or wolf)
GM: Okeydokey. I'll cut them out of this felt and sew them on.
GS: Can I draw his mouth?
GM: Go for it.
GS: I want to drink your soda.
GM: Here you go.
―――――
K: That's usually, "I want to drink your blood."
J: It's usually blood.
K: Uh-huh. That's a cute one.
J: Sounds like they're having fun.
C: Yeah, in a very dark cave somewhere or a castle.
K: Exactly. You know, some people are wondering whether they should join the program or not. I don't know.
CJ: Oh, go for it.
