遠山顕の英会話楽習 Monday, June 17

I thought for a moment that a Queen concert was started or something. Well...

―――――
U R the ★
―――――
We're seeing fantastic results.

Jeff...
Uh-huh.
You are the star.
All right.
―――

How's the new workout machine?
I love it.
That's good.
I've seen great results
Maybe I could come by and try it.
Anytime.

―――
Say It!
―――
Jeff, are you ready five times in one breath?
I think I can do this.
All right. Let's ...
I'll try.
All right.

That has meat in it. ×5

Twice... thrice ... fourth time ... last time.
That had everything in it.

――――
Write It!
――――
★ ……と言っています
The man is saying .... でよろしいでしょうか?
Well, I mean if we translate that Japanese exactly, that's exactly what it would be. But I think using the present continuous here might imply that he is saying one thing but maybe doing something else.

Yeah, so it might not be as clear and direct as using the present tense.
OK.
So, that's why I would recommend using the present tense here. It's more objective and it's a nice way to just say the facts.
OK.
You know this is what happens. So I would say, "誰々 says that 何々."
Okay.

★ ただ
So this is not "ta-da!" No?
Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
Well, we're going to use simply "but." "But 何々."
Just like in Japanese "tada," it shows a contrast to or kind of a change of direction from the sentence before it.
So "何々 but 何々."

★ ……ということがわかります
Oh, yeah, that's right. It wasn't in the dialog. Well, here there's a nice and handy little phrase that we can use. That shows that something happened and you didn't expect it happen, and I would say, "It turns out that 何々." And "that" is optional here. We can also just say, "It turns out 何々."

The man says that he has seen great results on a vegan diet. But it turns out that he's not a strict vegan.

So Carolyn...
Yeah.
What's another situation going to be like?
Well, now, the man is on a strict but strange diet.
―――

I've been on a sea food diet for three months.
That's great! How do you feel?
Fantastic! You should try it. I'm really enjoying my life.
How do you do it?
Well, what are you going to order?
A cheese pizza.
That looks good. I'll have that. And wow! This ice cream soda looks great.
What about calories and everything?
Fine. I just see food, and if it sparks happiness, I'll have it.
Is that a diet?
Yes, I'm on a strict see food diet.
Hmm....

That's my kind of diet.
That's what I was thinking.
Very happy guy. No stress.
No, definitely not.
You see food and eat it.
That's right. But I have not seen great results.
Yeah, I wonder why. Is it because it has everything in it?
Okay! Well, that's about it for today. So until next time ...
Keep listening.
Keep practicing.
And keep on smiling and eating… everything.

How are you doing, you two?
I'm good.
I'm good.
Good!
How about you, Ken?
I'm good too.
We're all good.
Good!
Yeah, it's all good.
Good to go.
―――

I don't know I've heard those names before.
Yeah.
Me too.
Very familiar.
Somewhere... Sounds very familiar.

Maria sees Tony, and Tony sees Maria across the room.
Uh-huh.
Yeah.
Oh, my goodness.

――――
Apply It!
――――
Well, before we start this section, I have a question here for you.
Sure.
Did you see "The West Side Story," the movie?
I saw it once when I was a kid.
Oh, you did.
I've seen it many times.
Many times.
Yeah. I loved it. What about you, Ken?
I've seen it a few times, yeah.
It's not the happiest movies but the music ... wonderful.
Oh, you're into musicals.
Love musicals.

―――――
U R the ★
―――――
Wow! That was prefect. How do you do it?

Jeff…
Uh-huh. you are the star.
Got it.

You look so nice and fit!
Why, thank you!
How do you do it?
I work out regularly
That must be the secret.

―――
Say It!
―――
Carolyn, are you ready?
Uh... I am now.
Oh, you were not.
Oh, good for you.
Five times in one breath.
Sure.
Let's hear it.
OK.

Good for you. ×5

Good for you!

――――
Write It!
――――
★ ……なので驚きます
surprised at とか surprising とかいろいろありますが
Well, I'm going to suggest that we use the phrase "be surprised that 何々."
OK.
So it would go something like, "Urashima Taro was surprised that everything had changed."
Uh-huh. And you don't have to use "that," you can if you want. Either one is fine.

★ 彼女は彼に……と言います
say to him でよろしいですか?
Well, that's not wrong, I mean we could use the verb "say" here. Yeah, it would be, "She says to him 何々." But I think it's more conversational to use the verb "tell" here. So I would recommend writing, "She tells him 何々."
Oh, I see.
―――

At a high school reunion, Tony is surprised that Maria looks amazing. She tells him that indoor rock climbing has changed her life in a big way.

So Jeff...
Uh-huh.
What's another situation going to be like?
Well, now the time is 200 years later.
―――

Maria, you don't look a day past 100.
Why, thank you, Tony!
How do you do it?
Well, I was feeling rundown at 120, so I decided to give up living in the city.
Good for you!
Then I discovered rock climbing on Mars.
Oh!
It's changed my life in a big way.
Well, you look amazing. Keep it up, Maria!
Oh, thanks, Tony. I'll be going to Mars tomorrow.
Oh.
Do you want to come along?
I wish I could, but I have things to do then, on the moon.
Oh!
―――

I think the gravity is less on Mars.
Oh, yeah.
I don't know.
Well, Ken?
Yes?
We’ve come up with another wonderful show. How do you do it?
Yeah. How do you do it?
Well, with difficulty, I mean, with an effort, I mean, with a lot of great help from everybody.
Oh, well, good for you.
Good for you!
Thank you. Good for you too.

★ Question 1
What is this commercial about?

Well, back to the question, Carolyn.
Alrighty. What is this commercial about?

Jeff, did you happen to catch the right answer?
I sure did.
Let’s heat it.
It sounds like a lot of fun.
All right.
Silver Lake Rental Service.

Now what do they rent?
Oh!
Cabins.
My favorite, cabins!
All right.
And everything that applies to the cabin.
Yeah. And, and sleep a lot of people, you can get five people in one cabin.
Yeah.
Up to five people.
Uh-huh.
So, that's how big the cabins are.
We'll take the whole family or take five friends.
Oh, you won't be able to sleep in there if you take five friends.
Yeah, you could ... you could take four friends.
Oh! Oh, that's right.
I can do the math.

OK. And where are they?
Ah, Silver Lake.
Silver Lake, of course.
Yeah, they keep repeating these words, Silver Lake.
Yeah.
Silver Lake.
They want to make sure you can find it.
OK.

You don't go to Gold Lake.
Yeah.
Oh, no.
No.
Or Bronze Lake, either. You knew what I was going to say.
Maybe.

★ Right. Question 2
What else do they rent besides cabins?

All right. Back to question 2.
Uh-huh. What else do they rent besides cabins?

Carolyn, can you tell us?
I sure can, lots of fun stuff, boats, kayaks and standup paddleboards.

This paddle boarding is sort of a new sport?
It's kind of a new thing.
Yeah, definitely.
It's like a surf board, but it has a...
Paddle?

Okay.
But you can paddle it like a canoe.
So you get up on the surf board.
You get up on the board.
Yeah, you can stand up on it. Yeah, you stand up on it.
And use the paddle and go.
Right.
Yeah.

How much does it cost to rent a cabin?
Well, I heard $130 a night.
OK.
Which is pretty good, considering that...
If you split it.
Yeah, between five people. What is the worked out to.

(work out to = 金額などが〔…に〕算定される、~ということになる)

Well... I knew you were going to ask me that. You know I'm bad at math.

Uh, shall we move on or just to discuss how much people have to pay for this?
Well, it looks like they rent things that you normally wouldn't bring with you.
Oh, sure.
Like a sleeping bag or you know, maybe some toiletries or something like that, so... Yeah, boats, kayaks and standup paddleboards.

(toiletries = 洗面用具 articles used in washing and taking care of one's body, such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste)

That sounds really fun.
Yeah, definitely.

★ Question 3
Is there a cabin available for the caller?

Well, the lady seems interested in standup paddleboards.
Yeah, interesting.
Very interesting. OK, back to the last question.

Right. Is there a cabin available for the caller?

Jeff, is it "yes" or "no"?
That is a "yes."
OK.
There is a cabin available for two nights from July 10th.

So she better make her reservation early.
Well, yeah. But she says she has to check her schedule, I guess.
Oh, she is not going to make a reservation right now.
No, it doesn't look like it.
She says she's going to think about it, and to check her schedule.
So she should have a very short think about it.
Yes, if there's only two nights available.
―――

I think I'm going to call them and grab that two nights in July.
Jeff!
Yeah.
Oh, poor lady. She'll be losing her room.
Hey, you snooze you lose.

Well, maybe we should go with Jeff then, we should…
Yeah, maybe we should...
Ah, sorry guys, this is just for me.
Oh.
Oh...
Well, I was thinking of recording some of our programs there.
Oh, yeah. Nice idea.
Oh, no, this is just for vacation. No work!
Oh.
OK.
No recording on a paddleboard.

Hey, Ken.
Yes, Carolyn.
Maybe we should call before Jeff does.
Hey!
Why not?
All right.
