Difference Between Era and Period

A period is a large interval of time with a definite characteristic while an era is a long period of time marking the start and end of an important event.

An era refers to a specific time period while a period may be used to refer to events that do not have any specific era or exact dates.

Nara period / Nara era
the Meiji period / the Meiji era
the Showa period / the Showa era
Edo period / Edo era

どちらも同じように見えますが、意味合いが多少異なります。
「何年~何年まで」とはっきりとした期間を示したい場合は、era。
ある期間、「その頃には」と言った意味合いで使うのであれ、period。

ダイアログでは、Nara period を使っていますが、この場合、いわゆる歴史的な、奈良時代、何年から始まって何年に終わったという期間に焦点を置いているわけではなく、奈良の頃(奈良時代)に起こった出来事に焦点を当てているので period.
年号に焦点をあてる(era)か、その時代付近に起こった出来事に焦点を当てる(period)かの違いでしょうか???
